It Started with Love
How our family's journey became a resource for others
In early 2026, my husband experienced a medical emergency that changed our lives overnight. As we were trying to process the seriousness of his diagnosis, his doctors told us that following a low-sodium lifestyle would now be an essential part of managing his health.
We thought the transition would be simple. We ate pretty healthy and rarely cooked with much salt, so surely we were already doing well.
Then I stood in our pantry the night he came home from the hospital, reading nutrition labels with eyes wide in shock, thinking:
"I can't feed him any of this."
What made the next couple of weeks even harder is that we received good advice when he was discharged from the hospital, but it wasn't practical advice. We heard things like, "Focus on fresh fruits and vegetables," and "Avoid cottage cheese." That was helpful as general guidance, but it didn't answer the question I needed answered at 6:00 in the evening:
"What ingredients can I use to make dinner tonight?"
I immediately bought a low sodium cookbook, but once I realized that its strategy was “make every single thing you eat from scratch,” I knew that wasn’t practical for us. We both work full-time. We have two dogs, four cats, and parents who need a little more help these days. What we didn't have was unlimited hours to spend in the kitchen each week. We needed a list of ready-made products that fit into a low sodium lifestyle. And no such list existed—at least not all in one place.
So I set out on the journey that led us here. I spent countless hours over the next months standing in the grocery store aisles, searching grocery store and Instacart websites, reading Reddit and Facebook posts and dietitian blogs, and using every tool I could find to uncover products and brands that were lower in sodium. I began amassing a working product inventory in a spreadsheet because while the information was out there, it certainly wasn’t easy to find.
And it made me wonder how anyone who has walked this road before us has done it. If you've been living this lifestyle for years, I'm honestly in awe of you. We're still relatively new to this journey, and I have so much respect for the people who figured it out long before resources like this existed.
As our list grew, something unexpected happened. We stopped focusing on all the foods we thought we'd lost and started discovering ways to bring them back, including pizza night and homemade macaroni and cheese. Favorite family recipes found new life with different ingredients. Instead of mourning everything we couldn't have anymore, we began celebrating everything we still could.
That changed more than our grocery list. It changed how we looked at this new chapter of our lives.
Through that process, I realized my growing spreadsheet could become something much bigger. So I built the Lower Sodium Product Guide to share all the products I’ve discovered with anyone trying to navigate a lower-sodium lifestyle.
The Lower Sodium Product Guide is free because I believe people looking for help shouldn't have to pay just to find suitable grocery options.
No subscriptions. No paywalls. No distracting ads. Just information that I hope makes grocery shopping a little less overwhelming.
This project started as a labor of love for the wonderful person with whom I share my life. It grew into a way to share that same care with anyone facing the same challenges we did.
My hope is that this tool helps you spend less time standing in grocery store aisles reading labels and more time enjoying meals with the people you love. If it helps you bring back a favorite family recipe, discover a new tradition, or simply answer the question, "What's for dinner tonight?" then every hour spent building it has been worthwhile.
It started with love, and I hope you can feel a little of that every time you visit.
